Rickshaw is a common mode of transportation used in many parts of the world, it is mostly used in developing countries like Pakistan, India and China. It is a three-wheel vehicle which can carry almost 4 passengers. It is an alternative to a taxi in which you travel from one place to another and pay a fare according to the distance traveled. However after doing some research i found a new version of the rickshaw used in Pakistan known as the “Chingchi Rickshaw”. In Pakistan Chingchi Rickshaw is used in big metropolitan cities like Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad. It is cheaper than the traditional rickshaw, almost $1000 US dollars. As you can see it is just a motorcycle which is attached to a passenger carrier. The motorcycle used has a 70 cc engine and has the capacity to carry only two people but when attached with the passenger carrier it can accommodate 8 passengers. The reason it is so popular and widely used is because it has a fixed fare system, either you are traveling a 1 mile or 10 miles you are paying the same fare, which is almost 15 cents. The driver of a Chingchi Rickshaw earns about $3 a day if lucky $5, and they have to drive 7 days a week and 365 days a year in order to make ends meet.
In the video you can see a chigchi rickshaw driver doing a wheelie.
Fareed a 51-year-old rickshaw drivers with three kids and a wife tells his story.
“I used to work is a garment factory, they fired me because I could not stand for long because of my back pain so I started driving the rickshaw because I had no other option, I had to provide for my family. I work hard so that I can feed my family.
I drive about 16 hours a day, there are some days I make about $5 and sometimes I barely make $2 a day. I have to work every day without any day off because if I take a day off that means I can’t buy food for my family that day. I have 3 small kids to feed. The government does nothing to make our lives better and keeps on increasing the taxes and fuel prices which makes our life even worse.”
This is one of the many stories of rickshaw drivers in Pakistan and around the world.
