East Hampton, New York town officials are charging 23 Uber drivers in violation of the town’s taxi laws. According to the East Hampton and Montauk taxi laws only those taxi drivers can operate in the area whose license is tied up to a physical address in East Hampton. The town officials claim that Uber drivers are in complete violation of the local taxi laws and have been violating these laws for more than an year.
If the Uber drivers are found guilty they would have a criminal conviction with $1000 fine and one year jail. Uber drivers have been picking up passengers from East Hampton and Montauk, knowing that they have been violating the local taxi laws and will be fined $1500. However, they continue to do so because the drivers knew that the fine would be reimbursed by Uber. Uber is now completing shutting its operations in East Hampton and Montauk fearing jail time for their drivers.
The East hampton officials have taken a stand to protect local taxi and limo business.
“If the residents of East Hampton and Montauk require a taxi service they can use the local taxi services”, says East Hampton town official.
